OUR COMMUNITY
Hidden Lake Estates is a community of 154 lots with the average size being 3.55 Acres and is
located just north of Lake Wallenpaupack in north east Pennsylvania. On lot 155 we have an eight
unit condominium unit. Although Hidden Lake Estates is located in Paupack Township, Wayne
County, its mailing address is Hawley which is in Hawley Borough of Wayne County. Many people
who live in the adjacent Paupack or Palmyra townships have a Hawley mailing address. When
needed on rare occasions, we avail ourselves of the services of the State Police, Honesdale EMS for
emergency medical and Lakeville Volunteer Fire Company.
For many members of the community, Hidden Lake Estates is a retreat from the hectic life in New
York or New Jersey. Currently 54.5% (78) of the lots have houses on them with approximately 65.4%
(51) of the residents being full time. Many of the residents are retired from New York or New Jersey
and reside in Pennsylvania because they do not tax pensions here in Pennsylvania. Most residents
are here for the peace and tranquility. Hidden Lake Estates is the great escape.
Our 40 acre man made lake is one of the best around for large mouth bass fishing. Boating on the
lake is limited to electric trolling motors, rowing or sailing for the more adventurous. Although our logo
has a sailboat in it, I have never seen a sailboat consistently operate on the lake due to the changing
wind speed and direction. Most of the fishing on the lake is catch and release. Even a bad day of
fishing on our lake is a pretty good day overall.
Many of the original residents of the town of Hawley worked on the Delaware & Hudson Canal and
the gravity railroad that used to transport anthracite coal as it made it way from the mines in
Pennsylvania to the New York markets in mid 1800’s. In fact, the town of Hawley was named after
Irad Hawley, the first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company. Throughout Hawley, you will see
pictures and evidence of this bygone era. Look at the buildings architecture and you will see
evidence of the past, complete with an “Odd Fellows Society” building, which brings a smile to my
face every time I see it. Although Hawley is working hard to refurbish their cracked sidewalks with
new and improved sidewalks, period lighting and plantings, it is interesting to see things the way they
were back in simpler yet harder times.
The biggest draw to the area is still the man made Lake Wallenpaupack with its 52 miles of
shoreline, 13 miles long. People come from all over to partake of its power boating, fishing, camping,
winter ice golf, or just sitting in a boat, relaxing, watching the world go by. There is something for
everyone.
